How do we know when to deliver your Oil ?
The rate of heating fuel consumption is based on how cold the weather has been
and for how long. Knowledge of the temperature - time relationship makes it
possible to estimate when to deliver fuel to a customer. The system is based on
a system of units called DEGREE DAYS. Degree Days reflect fuel consumption and
are reported each winter season for delivery scheduling purposes. The National
Weather Service observes the heating season as beginning on September 1st, and
ending on May 31st. Our Delivery Log is built on the Degree Day system and
ensures that sufficient fuel oil is always delivered before a fuel tank is
completely empty. Emergency dry calls often require additional services to
restart a heating system.
What is a degree day ?
A degree day is simply a unit for measuring how cold (or warm) it has been over
a 24 hour period. Whenever the daily average outdoor temperature drops below 65
degrees, Degree Days are recorded. For
example, if during a 24 hour period the high outdoor temperature was 70 degrees
and the low temperature was 50 degrees, then the average temperature for that
day was 60 degrees - halfway between
70 and 50 degrees. Since the average is 5 degrees less than the base temperature
of 65 degrees, 5 Degree Days are assigned to that day. Over a period of days,
the accumulation of Degree Days enables us to construct an estimate of heating
fuel use since the last delivery and when a new delivery is required.
